Here I Go Again – EEEtheWorld

February 16, 2015

Here I Go Again

ADVENTURE ROUND 2: MKE–>PKE (Milwaukee, WI USA to Pakse, LAOS)

So here I go again on another Southeast Asian Adventure. I’ve been in this seat before, although this time I am filled with known excitement of the land and people I will meet. Travel has become my lifestyle my routine and for everyone who supports this and helps me on my journey I am so grateful!

Here’s insight of the intentions I have for this trip:

~laugh a ton

~write more and post more

~continue sharing moments of ebullience and gathering supporters of EEE

~whole heartedly accept life as it comes and enjoy experiencing new people, places and cultures!

~grow in trust of myself and my flexibility in my journey as a new Yogi

I look forward to staying connected while I’m physically away and keep me posted on your EEE moments.

Bon Voyage,

HallieEEE

A lot can change in a year – EEEtheWorld

1 year ago today I buckled myself into my flight to Bangkok.

I traveled from Chicago, Ohare Intl –>Naratia, Japan –> Bangkok, Thailand –> Chiang Rai, Thailand (OCT/NOV) –>Hong Kong (1 week DEC) –> Bali (1 week DEC) –> Back to Bangkok and Phuket, Thailand with the fam –(2 weeks DEC) –> Home (Wisconsin JAN) for Xmas and to finish applying to Grad School –>Back through Bangkok (FEB 24 hrs) –> Pakse, Laos ( FEB jungle trek for 1 week) –> Vientienne, Laos –> Hanoi, Vietnam (FEB1 week)–> HaLong Bay, Vietnam (FEB3 days) –>Phnom Penh, Cambodia (MARCH3 weeks) –> SIem Reap, Cambodia (MARCH 1 week) –>Siahnoukville &  Koh Rong, Cambodia (MARCH 3 days and not enough time!!) –> Krabi Thailand and Railey Beach & a couple "KOH’s" (islands)!! (MARCH 5 more days cuz I can never get enough of Thailand)–> Through Malaysia airport–> Singapore, Singapore ( MARCH 2 days) –> New Dehli, India –> Rishikesh, India (APRIL 1 month @ vinyasa yoga school) –> Kathmandu, Nepal (earthquake survivor) (MAY 1 week)–> Pokhara, Nepal (earthquake disaster relief) (MAY 4 days)–> Home sweet home.

I also had the opportunity to catch up with friends in Chicago, (MAY) Indianapolis (JUNE), and Evansville (JULY).

One of my favorite trips was the 10 hour drive from Mke, WI to Midway, KY where the LFA Headquarters is (JULY). The southern hospitality here is alive and well. I could not be more grateful to work towards the mission of advocating for local food enterprises.

But most of the summer was spent between Mequon, WI and Elkorn, WI (The Lake!) Home sweet Home to settle in with Dil the Pup.. Run by the river, or jump off the dock!

In AUG, I had the pleasure of driving across country with my parents and 2 dogs to start my new chapter in Denver, CO.

We stopped just outside of Des Moines, Iowa and a small mining town 2 hours east of Denver called (??). Traveling to my new home, across the US was extraordinary!

Now in Denver, CO, where I have settled just south of DU’s campus in the cutest Kokopelli Kottage ever, I am enjoying getting to know my neighborhood and surrounding hoods (Cap Hill, LoDo, Highlands, Union Station, Cherry Creek) and Boulder and THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS!!! Rocky Mountain High is Real!

Incontestably the past year is the most traveled and transformative 365 days of my life. The marvelous aspect is the adventure does not stop if you commit to a lifetime of open mindedness, empathy, and learning.

"EEE" Everyday.

The connections I’ve made with citizens across our globe are completely relevant to my physical, spiritual, mental and educational well being.

Now, as a Master’s Candidate at DU’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies  in international development concentrating on global health and food security, I am embarking on a lifelong journey to make a career out of the compassion I lived everyday on the road.

If you’re thinking about letting go. LET GO.

LET IT BE LET IT GO!

Let go of security

Volunteer abroad

Immerse yourself out of your comfort zone

Experience perspectives from the opposite side of the planet

Never take for granted the support system back home

Believe in yourself

Accept that everything may happen for a reason- but you have to figure out what that reason is for yourself

PICS COMING SOON!

I’m just gonna write… – EEEtheWorld

January 7, 2016

I’m just gonna write…

…and it’s going to change everyday. In the past, I’ve been overly concerned about having a perfect theme for this blog paired with perfect posts.

I’ve had so many ideas floating through my head that never come to fruition on this keyboard due to my fear of the literature not being just right.

Well 2016 is the year of mistakes… that is right… I am not afraid to just go for it. Trial and error = progress.

There are so many quotes that run through my head coinciding with this theme like Thomas Edison’s 100 or so attempts at creating the lightbulb and Michael Jordan not making his high school basketball team. A mentor of mine and past executive at SB, John Stoiber, runs a blog titled King of Failure "Failure is a moment – Success is a Lifetime". That’s what I am going for. You get this gist? Mark Cuban even declares that no one will remember your failures as soon as you achieve success.

And what does success look like for EEEtheWorld this year? Consistent writing. Period.

How to Balance your budget by quitting your job and traveling the world. Huh!?

How you spend your money, and more importantly, your time, revolves around priorities. Figuring out what your priorities are, is the trick. Although this took me 3 cities, 4 corporate jobs, several happy hours and most of my twenties to figure out, I'm grateful to report I finally have my priorities in order (for now). First step, I commit corporate suicide, said sianara to my comfortable corner cubical overlooking Michigan ave, and left my everything to travel Southeast Asia to figure out!

Thailand itinerary- Before. You Go

Self-Reflection

As you begin to plan your journey halfway around the world, understanding the "why" behind going will help you make the most of your experience. Check out Simon Sinek's book start with why!
An inspirational quote from Ian Baubatta: "travel renders you speechless, then turns you into a story teller!"
What story do you want to tell when you return? Why are you going!? Go there, and live it!

Finances
Apply for a travel credit card. JP Morgan Chase Sapphire Preferrred or Capitol one venture cars are the best. I have both. Right now I only charge everything on my chase card to boost my "miles". Their customer service is extraordinary no matter where you are in the world and their points are tremendous plus it's not linked to any airline, hotel, etc... You can spend as you wish. Ive already earned my flights back to Asia and back.
Open a Charles schwab checking account and get their international debit card. My family has been banking with CS my entire life so perhaps I am biased but I think they are the premiere financial instruction in servicing their clients. Even though I do not have a lot of money, I am sure treated like it. Huge perk- CS does not have any ATMs so to solve this problem they allow you to go anywhere and pay for the fees. This way you never have to worry about visiting the ATM too many times on your trip. Plus the deposit back in your bank account after your travels making up for the fees you acquired is awesome!
Figure out what your budget is and stick to it!
A huge perk of Thailand is in additon to how affordable it is once you're there, is also the quality. Due to my backpackers budget I am not as well experienced in the "luxurious" side of Thai Travel, but I can guarantee you that some of the most delicious food I devoured was from the street for pennies.
Understand that bargaining is part of thai culture- so in markets cut the offered price in half and smile and joke around then find a middle ground and don't be afraid to walk away to secure your bargain.

Flights
Set up daily flight alerts on airfarewatchdog.com to BKK.
Suvarnabhumi Airport) is the international airport in Thailand you will fly into. Thailand has several airports, two in bankok so always check your tickets on where you are flying from/to. However, it is fairly easy on public transportation to get from one airport to the other. There is a free shuttle which takes approx an hour.

Visas
Do your visa preparation
Upon arrival in Thailand you will apply for a 30 day tourist visa at airport immigration. It's $35. Having extra passport photos on hand, being sure your passport is not within 6 months of expiration, and addresses of where you will be "residing" in Thailand will expedite the process. They are very organized and everything is also in English. Just follow the heard getting off the flight to get to immigration.

Packing
Rule: If you don't wear it at home you won't like wearing it when traveling
I'm a very light packer. You do your thing. Here is the backpack which gets me place to place without checking luggage: Image from http://www.backcountry.com/images/items/900/OSP/OSP0249/CONGN.jpg.

Stuff I am glad to always have on hand when traveling:
  • Duct tape
  • Anti-Malaria pills (although I chose not to take these in Thailand although recommended)
  • Tiny first aid kit with lots of ibuprofen and pepto bismol (only sell Imodium in most countries and my body reacts better with the pink stuff!)
  • Don't pack any shawls- buy a sarong when you get there!
  • Dress that works by day or night
  • At least two bathing suits
  • Baby or face wipes
  • A small backpack for day trips
  • I only bring tennis shoes and Birkenstocks, there are seldom times I miss my strapy gold summer wedges (but it's your honeymoon and you want to look hot!!)
  • A light, activewear pullover or zippy (it actually can cool off at night) plus to tour any temples your shoulders and knees need to be fully covered
  • Journal
  • I-phone( doubles as camera and notepad plus can buy cheap simcard in country if necessary)
  • French Hair clip that can double as a brush
  • Tampons- they're hard to find for some reason
  • Something to make you feel absolutely fabulous- I don't go anywhere without my twist top travel Chanel Mademoiselle perfume
Travel Tips:
  • utilize screenshot on your phone for all reservation emails/ important travel info then create a travel folder of these photos to easily find
  • Even though tipping is not customary it can make a big difference abroad if you do- pack some extra US singles or carry small foreign currency/bills to leave behind as a nice american citizen
  • Get your vaccines/ travel check up at least 1 month prior to departure
  • Don't worry about planning everything out before hand...no matter what you do to prepare, you never know what awaits you when you arrive, so leave some time to be spontaneous #SEOT
  • have a f@&%!ng blast
Remember to share your EEE moments with me so you can be featured on the blog and enlighten the world!!
